Mt. Elbert Trail

Yes, it is dark outside.

It was our last weekend in Colorado.  So, we decided to get up before dawn, grab sweatshirts and head lamps, drive three hours into the mountains, and go for a hike.  We got breakfast, made coffee, grabbed our stuff, and headed out.  It was early.  And dark.  And early.  Coffee could only do so much.

Don't be fooled, this is just a false summit.

We reached drove through Leadville, down a rocky dirt road, and finally reached the parking lot.  We got some nice views of the sunrise over Leadville.  After about 2.25 miles, and 2200′ of elevation gain, we passed treeline.  At this point, we decided to enjoy the views, catch our breath, and head back down the trail.  We’re glad we did, since in a clearing just past treeline Tony noticed a little blue grouse happily eating grass.  This was a new bird for us, and since she’s only found out West, we decided that was a fitting end to our CO travels.

Mt. Elbert's massive next door neighbor, Mt. Massive

On the drive back to Denver, we admired the historic buildings and painted advertisements in Leadville.

CO Grilling

Remember to move meat away from Flare-Ups.

Remember to move meat away from Flare-Ups

Since it will be another year or so before we can grill on our balcony, we decided to take advantage of grilling while we still have the chance.  We also relaxed around the apartment, and had some fun with kitchen utensils.

Frisco BBQ Festival / Challenge

Gumby Enjoys BBQ Too!

Gumby Enjoys BBQ Too!

Each year the town of Frisco, CO hosts a BBQ festival / challenge.  Teams travel from all over the U.S. to compete for the best BBQ.  Most teams also make food to sell to the general public.  This year we got to enjoy pork and beef ribs, BBQ chicken wings, pulled pork, and beef brisket.  Gumby also made an appearance, and said the he wondered why he wasn’t invited to last year’s festival.

Chick-fil-A Customer Appreciation Day

What Would you do for Chicken Nuggets?

What would you do for Chicken Nuggets?

Apparently Chick-fil-A has a yearly customer appreciation day.  On this day, customers can get free food – from individual items to full meals.  There is one catch, however…. customers must dress as a cow.  Now, a single cow item (even a cow-printed purse) gets one a free item.  Those who want a full meal must dress as a cow from head to toe.  Louisa decided that this sounded like a great chance to get some good, free food.  Tony, however, declined to participate in the festivities.  :-)

(OK Chick-Fil-A… We’ve added the photo like you asked.  We’ll take that free lifetime of chicken any time now.  ;-) )
