November 6, 2010 – This morning we began our adventures by heading to JB’s Smokeshack. The restaurant itself has about 10 tables, and a sign encouraging people to share tables as needed so as to meet new friends. Service is simple – order at the counter, grab a styrofoam plate and plastic serving utensils, and help yourself. Options today included shredded pork (the best we’ve had anywhere, including Denver and Kansas City), fried chicken with a spicy batter, and smoked pork ribs. Classic sides were mac n cheese (always a crowd favorite), hash and rice (one word – wow – you must try this), and BBQ baked beans with a bit of pulled pork tossed in. We passed on the carrots, corn, collard greens, and okra gumbo, but are sure these also would have been tasty. Louisa enjoyed the cole slaw and potato salad, and Tony said the sweet tea was tasty. We also split some baked and spiced apple slices, they tasted like apple pie without the crust. After lunch we took a quick detour to Angel Oak. The tree is thought to be over 1500 years old, and is quite massive.
Our last stop was Folly Beach. We spotted a red tail hawk and osprey on the way over, which was a great start to the bird watching. Once on the beach it was a tad cold. Ok, so it was only 59 outside, which wouldn’t be bad with sun and no wind. With partial sun and major wind coming off the ocean, it was cold. But we did got for a bit of walk. Along the way we spotted a few solitary pelicans, a pair of sanderlings… and then a massive group of pelicans out on the water. On our way back to the car we also got to see some Monarch butterflies, and an Eastern phoebe perched in a branch.
