Birthday Strawberry Picking at Miller Farms Market

Hanging out at Miller Farms.

Middle of May 2011

It’s my birthday!  (Well, it was when all these activities took place; the posting isn’t quite keeping up with things since I’ve been working some crazy fun hours the past few weeks).  Anyway, we decided we wanted to do a birthday activity… so we shifted our work schedules to be able to head over to Miller Farms Market before they closed.  We’ve never gone strawberry picking, and new the berries were in season.  Despite some heavy rain showers before/after berry picking, we had a perfect 30 minute window of time.  All we had to do was take off our sandals and wade through a bit of cool, muddy water. ;-)   The berries themselves were beautiful, and we had plenty of time to pick (and eat!) before the storms rolled back through.  We also snagged some fresh cream from a dairy in PA.

The candles were very creative. :)

After berry picking we enjoyed dinner and drinks (Guinness and Bass drafts) at Otter House; the black bean burger and mac ‘n cheese combo might be even better than the bleu veggie burger and mac ‘n cheese.  Post dinner was admiring birthday plants (thanks T!) as well as cake and candles.  The cake was chocolate-coffee, with coconut cream cheese and marshmallow filling, and ganache on top.

Strawberries and cream are a new May favorite for us.

The ganache was made with fresh cream from Miller’s farm market.  The cream also whipped up beautifully with a bit of vanilla and sugar, and made a perfect accompaniment to the fresh berries.

Moving, Part II

Louisa’s parents flew into town this past weekend for a whirlwind trip throughout Denver.

Dinosaur Ridge

We went to Dinosaur Ridge and saw dinosaur footprints fossilized in the rocks. Interestingly, the footprints were discovered during a road construction project.

We also travelled into the mountains to go to Idaho Springs and eat at the Buffalo restaurant. While there we enjoyed the enormous buffalo (and beef) burgers and the french fries. We also ate at Macaroni Grill, which has delicious Italian food, and enjoyed ice cream at Coldstone Creamery. Needless to say, we had some good food this weekend.

Tony on Couch

We also had a lot of help moving into our new apartment, and moving out of and cleaning the old apartment. So, between the four of us, a full day and a half of moving, plus untold evenings of unpacking, were condensed into 2.5 action-packed days of moving, cleaning, packing, driving, and unpacking. Now, the apartment, while not spotless, is looking pretty darn good. Pictures are coming soon (as soon as we get them edited and posted)!

Pearl Street Mall and Big Papa’s BBQ

So, yesterday we decided to venture north to the hippie and yuppie-populated land of Boulder. If you’ve ever watched South Park, you might be familiar with the hippie circles that sprang up in one episode. While Boulder isn’t quite that bad, it is a college city full of interesting people. We went to the Pearl Street Mall, which is several blocks long and closed to automobile traffic. There are double rows of planters with trees and flowers, which create a nice shaded path. The stores are eclectic, and while we didn’t go into any of them, it was fun to walk around and see what was there. There were also several groups of musicians, guitarists, two older gentlemen playing very long tubed instruments, and a flowing rock waterfall. There were also two semi-homeless guys, and a couple of backpackers. It is also a great place for activists and political parties to have petition signings and surveys (except that we mostly ignore them, since they can be too aggressive with their tactics).

Then we went to Big Papa’s BBQ for dinner. It’s a little restaurant in a shopping plaza, where there’s a big chalkboard menu and you order at the counter. While it’s unassuming (as I think good BBQ places should be) the smell of the food was enough to let you know this was a good choice for dinner. Tony enjoyed the ribs with Memphis sauce, mac n cheese and fries. Louisa had fried catfish, pulled pork with KC sauce, hush puppies and fried okra. The sides were very good, and the meat was incredible. The pork ribs were large and fairly lean, and the sauce was a perfect complement to the meat. The catfish tasted like catfish, but the homemade tartar sauce made that dish. The pulled pork and the sweet sauce to go with it was wonderful, tender but not dry, and very flavorful.

We also enjoyed root beer floats from A&W for dessert. They were a perfect ending to the meal.
