Restaurant Reviews: EVO (Extra Virgin Oven) and Madra Rua

Extra Virgin Oven is a cute bistro, while Madra Rua is a (still smokey) Irish Pub.  Both are located in historic North Charleston.  Yes, historic North Charleston only happens to be one street, but that street has been revitalized and has a lot of good food choices.

Extra Virgin Oven has a tantalizing selection of wood fired pizzas.  We split the pork trifecta – the pepperoni was slightly spicy, the sausage was definitely spicy, and the few pieces of bacon hidden under the cheese were thick and well-done.  The cheese was very mild, and while I would have preferred more of it, quite good.  The sauteed onions were also nice and sweet, while the tomato sauce highlighted the natural sweetness of the tomatoes without overwhelming them with spices.  The crust itself is quite thin and crispy.  If you’re looking for a great wood-fired pizza, you can’t go wrong with EVO.

Madra Rua is another excellent food choice in North Charleston.  The pub still happens to allow smoking.  This means that your hair will smell like smoke, as will all your clothes, and you’ll likely need to go home and take a hot shower.  Eat there anyway, the food is worth it. 🙂  The shepherd’s stew looked great as it went by to another table of diners.  However, we decided to order the open faced roast beef (fantastic) and the fish and chips (one of the best we’ve had).  They also have Guinness on draught, for those who enjoy such things.
