Review: Kickin’ Chicken

It’s been awhile since we had chicken wings. Of course, it’s been awhile since we’ve found a place that had decent wings. Fortunately, we found the Kickin’ Chicken in West Ashley. We ventured out during Happy Hour, which was a happy coincidence – draft beers are good and only $3 (normally they’re $4). They don’t have many local craft beers on tap (ok, they only have one), but they do have a variety of Sam Adams, Yuengling, and Shock Top. We settled on some Sam Adams, which proved a nice accompaniment to the loaded cheese fries. They’re not skimpy with the cheese (or the bacon), though the fries themselves are nothing special. The wings though are quite good. We sampled a variety of sauces, including the pterodactyl, sesame ginger, southwestern, spicy teriyaki and honey bbq. Louisa liked the bbq best (actually, that was the only one she liked) but Tony thought all the sauces were good. The sesame ginger was his least favorite, since the sauce presence was so thin that the wings were able to dry out. Louisa also got a bowl of chili; the chili is loaded with ground beef and just a hint of kidney bean, and is thick, savory, slightly spicy and topped with shredded cheese and cool sour cream. If you’re not feeling wings, or just want a nice bowl of something warm, the chili is a must-have. We’d give this place a solid 3.5 stars, trending towards 4 (out of 5), and would definitely go back. They also have a rewards program for frequent diners – ask about it when you get your check.
